Hong Kong's social science institutions have achieved impressive results on the global stage, with multiple universities securing high rankings in the 2022 Times Higher Education global university social science rankings.
The University of Hong Kong took the 33rd spot, while Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 81st. The Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong followed closely, ranking 85th and 106th respectively. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also made the cut, ranking 117th.
Despite this impressive showing, experts warn that Hong Kong's social science sector still faces challenges. The development of social science research and education has been hindered by limited resources and a lack of recognition from the government.
Academics are calling for a renewed focus on social science education, citing its importance in driving social progress and addressing Hong Kong's deep-seated structural problems. By strengthening social science research and education, Hong Kong can rebuild its social fabric and promote a more just and equitable society.
